Saint Patrick's Town's resident genie grumbled as he hobbled around on his nurse-mandated crutches. He had just been cleared to go home from the infirmary, having spent a while there after expending all of his magical energy. Still unable to use his magic, he was stuck limping around weakly, attached to wooden splints the school nurse called 'crutches'. There was no time the cheerful genie cursed his luck more than at this moment, when his crutches would catch on divots in the uneven ground, and his classmates would look at him with pity. He wished he had just stay home. But alas, he was out of groceries, and was quite hungry, presently. Normally floating through town (quite literally) with a smile on his face and a spring in his proverbial step, today, a scowl decorated his tan face and a metaphorical rain cloud hovered over his head. Hobbling past a large tree, he tripped, his crutch catching on the root and his face heading on a collision course with the ground.
"Shoot." Grumbled the genie, pushing himself up and sitting on the ground, brushing the moss off of his worn tee shirt and glaring at any passersby that may choose to laugh. If only he could summon his magic, he would be fine. He would be back home by now. Opening his satchel, he pulled from it a stick of incense, chewing the end and inhaling the calming aroma while he pondered how he would get out of his current predicament. He was so lost in thought, he missed all movement around him and tuned out the bustle of the busy grove.
Speaking of the grove, it WAS busy at this time of day. Shop doors opened and closed at a breakneck pace, citizens flitting about greeting their neighbors and finishing their shopping. No one much paid any attention to the prankster that had found himself thrown to the ground in front of a huge willow tree, whose roots were gnarled and tangled into the moss, its massive stature shading a majority of the town from the early afternoon sun. Clovers, weeds, and moss grew unfettered in and out of the roots, and many piles of these plants made for a cool place to sit and rest, the constant-flowing brook of spring water making for a calming atmosphere and easy respite from the now-scorching days. Gil himself sometimes sat here to think, occasionally lighting a water pipe or chewing his incense, thinking of days past and present, and sometimes dozing off, taking a load off of his heart and mind. Even today, many residents had the same idea, some dozing in the moss, some sitting and writing or drawing in the shade. It was a truly magical picture, seeing moss moving seemingly by itself, betraying the resident buried beneath it, the clovers blowing in the wind and dandelions releasing their seeds to the wind.

(Copied from chat rp) In truth, some moss actually was moving by itself. Shay tried to shuffle himself out of his cloak enough to look around after a rather spectacular nap. After lifting his cloak off his face, he looked straight at Gil. It wasn't on purpose! It was simply hard to avoid looking at someone so... Shay turned a bright red color, and he covered his face with his cloak again. Gil looked up as some moss shifted into a familiar face. Shay was looking at him, red-faced, and Gil groaned, upset to be seen in this position. “Hey, Shamrock.” He greeted, grinning a bit. “Sorry, I’m a bit outta sorts today.” Apologized the genie, attempting to stand and failing miserably, falling back with a thud. Shay made a sound of understanding from under his cloak. He was trying very hard to stop blushing so much. He shook it off and checked again after hearing a thud. He quickly shuffled all the way out of his cloak and ran over to Gil. "Ah! Uh..are you going to be alright..is there..uh..anything I can do? “How bout helping me up?” Gil mused, looking up at Shay for what must have been the first time. “I just need to go get some food or something. Maybe you should go with me, to make sure I don’t fall again.” The genie said, his eyes darting back and forth, uncertain of the other boy’s answer. He helped up Gil, with his brain screaming at the suggestion Gil had. It sounded very much like a date to Shay! But that was just Shay. He stared into the distance, not giving an answer. “Or, uh, I mean, you don’t have to. I just thought it would be nice, but I mean, I’m just going to grab a bite to eat and then grab some groceries. Nothing interesting. You could totally go back to your nap, it’s fine.” Gil grabbed another stick of incense and started to chew on it, hobbling slightly away on his crutches. Shay snapped out of it. "No no! It is...that sounds..It sounds fun. I..Uh.." He walked after Gil, leaving his cloak behind. "I'll help you?" Smiling, Gil limped forwards, keeping pace with the other boy. “So, it’s a bit awful being stuck like this. It has occurred to me recently that I can’t cook. Or clean, really.” Gil admitted, staring forwards, moving a bit faster. “But I’m trying to learn without magic.” He stated “I might not get it back.” Muttering the last part, he looked at his companion. “So, where we eating?” Shay shrugged. "I'm so hungry I could eat a cow..but I don't care.." Shay considered how he himself couldn't really cook much. Not that it mattered. "At least you don't..leave a mess everywhere?"

(Copied from the chat) "How about here?" The genie suggested, gesturing with his head to what appeared to be a pub of some sort. "I'm sure they'll have SOME sort of cow for you to eat, Shamrock." Gil said with a smile, opening the door for his companion and following him inside. "Table for two, ma'am! Your finest, if you please!" Joked the prankster, leading the shorter boy to the table. After attempting to pull out the other boy's chair, and failing miserably, he plopped down in his own chair, defeated, and looked at the menu, grumbling about crutches and stupid magic.
Shay looked at Gil, a little puzzled. "I thought..I was suppose to be helping you.." He looked over the menu, a little sad that it seemed everything was cooked. He looked back up at Gil. "So..uh..you look..different? Did you...change your hair?"
"Funny, Shamrock, funny." Gil said, frowning. "I'm just a bit down on myself lately. Smiling is a bit taxing when everything hurts, huh?" The genie stated dryly, looking at his companion. "So how've you been then?"
"Oh..it wasn't a joke.. uh.." He yawned. "I don't...really know how I've been. Like..the academy has been nice. People seem to..like me? Like I have had a friend before..but just knowing..so many people enjoy me..It's nice." He scratched at where his new moss cloak was growing in. "But this is fun..thank you?"
"Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I sure like you, Shamrock." Gil stated, looking at the other boy and leaning forwards. "No need to thank me. You're pretty great company." The genie smiled and leaned back, blushing slightly. "So... uhm, you find anything you wanna eat?"
"Uh..give me a moment." Shay looked back to his menu. "Yeah..yeah...I think so..What about...you?"
"Well, sure." He stated, waving his hand to call the waitress over. "I'll have a salad, extra spinach and oil in the dressing please. Oh, and if you have cloves, those too, yeah?" Gil handed her the menu and leaned forwards onto his hands. "Your turn, Shay."
Shay blushed. "Uh, Steak with potatos. Rare steak...mashed potatos.." He tried to cover his face with his menu, before realizing he had to hand it back to the waitress. He handed it back, covering his face with his hand.
"What's wrong, Shamrock?" Gil asked, getting up to place a hand on his shoulder. "Do you need some fresh air? You're flushed!" The genie hoisted the boy up and placed a hand on his back, guiding him.
Shay wasn't quite sure how to respond. He liked Gil, but he wasn't really happy with being picked up. "Eh." He said, unsure how to react.
Gil realized his mistake and set the other boy down, clearing his throat and stumbling slightly. "Guess I wasn't ready for that much exertion..." He said, laughing a bit awkwardly. "Sorry, I just got worried you felt sick. Wouldn't want my date to get sick on me. That' d be a bad story to tell. I mean, and just think of what people would say. I mean, past what they already say. Am I rambling? I'm rambling."
Shay made a small squeak in the back of his throat. "You said date."
Gil blinked a few times quickly. "Well yeah. Is that bad? I thought you liked me!"
His face turned bright red. "No-no it is fine."
Gil's jaw dropped. "Oh... Cool. Can I hug you now?"
Shay looked at Gil with dead eyes. "No. I don't want gross..hands near me. Maybe when my cloak comes back."
Gil blinked again, slowly. "You're kidding, right?" He asked, crossing his arms.

Shay shook his head. "No, not at all. I..I honestly prefer having my cloak when people touch me. Like you can touch my face, but..I dunno, it is..it's a comfort thing."

"Right, okay. I'll try to remember. No hugs without the cloak." The genie flashed the shorter boy a thumbs up and gestured towards the table. "Maybe we sit down then? This isn't turning out very romantic." Gil mumbled the last part, sitting back down. He then realized he had been able to stand and walk without the crutches. Maybe his worry caused his magic to flare up again. Or maybe it was coming back. He looked out the window in thought, stroking his jaw and tapping his fingers on the table.

Shay fixed himself back into his chair. "Don't..don't worry about it too much. It grows back..quickly enough." He wasn't really sure what to say. "..So..you sure mutter a lot? Are you...nervous or something? ...I mean..it could be related to you feeling unwell..but I mean..I prefer when my words come out clearly..even if I can be a little..slow." Shay yawned after that last bit. Talking was always tiresome.

"Yeah, well, no, I mean, I do mutter a lot I suppose. It's like, uh, talking to yourself? I guess?" He was a bit embarrassed to admit his habit of stating his thoughts out loud, but it helped him focus on doing things and keeping his thoughts on track. "It helps me to focus, I suppose. My mind tends to wander and latch onto anything shiny, moving, or chaotic." Turning towards Shay, he smiled. "That's why I like you, Shamrock. You take everything so slowly. It's interesting. And maybe refreshing." The genie observed, focusing his attention fully on the other boy.
"But what do you wanna talk about?" Gil asked, hoping he wasn't boring his companion. "I don't see your part of the forest much. How're things there? Still damp and mossy?" He joked, grinning in mirth.

Shay smiled a little. "You would be surprised how much I actually...think about..in a day. And remind me to keep you away from machine parts because those fit..shiny..moving..and chaotic..well sometimes.." He slowly shrugged. "It is pretty much the same as any..piece of forest. It is only really mossy because of..the folks there.." He motioned to some moss now growing around his neck, pulling on it a bit. "Honestly, it is more..boring then anything.. But..I gotta admit..you aren't the first person to find my..laidback ways..enjoyable. I think more people have to..embrace it. No real point to rushing..everything. You've been around long enough..to know that..I would think.."

"Yeah, I suppose I have." Gil deadpanned, his grin fading. "But I didn't know you fixed machines!" He recovered, perking up again. "I'm pretty bad at them. Alec brought me this old toaster oven once, so I'd stop using his to make frozen pizzas, y'know..., And I blew it up. Like, KABLAM!" Grinning at the memory, he chuckled. "Turns out magic and machines don't really mix. Maybe... You could help me figure them out, then. I'd like to be able to cook without building a fire or using a my hairdryer." The genie suggested, smile widening, betraying his anxiety. "I mean, only if you want! This has been a pretty awful date anyways, with me being crippled and hyperactive, and all. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd given up on liking me already!"

"..it seems like a very silly reason to dislike you..I'm not sure how well I could fix any kind of oven..I'm not really used to heating elements.." He rubbed his nose. "But, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.. I am sure I won't..kablam..it." Shay picked at his finger nails. "..well unless you want it to blow up again..not sure how it would help, but.." Shay smiled lightly and laughed to himself. "But shouldn't we..eat first? Have you even been eating.."

"Mostly fruit and vegetables, really." Came the flippant reply, a tan hand waving in dismissal. "Ah, but here's the food!" Perking up, he smiled at the waitress, putting the paper napkin over his lap. "Well, Bon Appetit, Shamrock." Upon finishing half of his salad ridiculously fast, the genie looked at his companion and a dopey smile covered his face. "How's the steak? I kinda miss having meat, so let me live a bit vicariously, yeah?" Joked the boy, taking another bite of the leafy meal.

Shay was still cutting away at his steak, making it into bite sized pieces, when Gil asked him how it was. "..well..It looks good. And smells good.." He put down his fork and knife, and popped a piece into his mouth. He looked up in thought, nodding a bit to himself as he chewed. "It tastes like meat, no doubt.."

Gil chuckled. "Well, I'm glad this isn't one of those places that tries to pass tofu and giblets off as meat, then." He reasoned, staring at his salad for a moment. "Hey, shamrock, what're we doing after we're finished up here? I could walk you home, I mean, it's kinda late, I guess." Inquired the jinn, trailing off as he continued, shoving a forkful of lettuce in his mouth to stop the inevitable word vomit.

Shay smiled, laughing softly. He thought over Gil's words. "I think..you over-estimate my living arrangements. It isn't that easy to just..walk home. Not that it is dangerous, mind you... just.. it isn't really an exact spot that you can.. I'd much rather head back to the school or..something. Florence might worry.. but otherwise.. Uh.. How is your salad tasting?"

"You live in the forest, don't you? I do too, I could just walk you on my way. But if you'd prefer the school, I get it. Not good to have a genie knowing where you live. We're notorious stalkers." He joked, grinning mischievously. "It's alright. I'm used to the whole vegetarian thing. I miss meat, but, you do what you can." Acknowledged Gil thoughtfully, looking at the remains of his leafy dinner with slight distaste.
