Hollow: There was a sudden rush of beating leather wings as a dozen or so black bats flew out of a battered green hat. The dark flock screeched and flapped their way into gloomy grey sky above Halloween Town. Once all the bats had left, the hat returned back to its place on Hollow’s pumpkin head as he spun on one boot, his wooden arms outstretched. Coming to a sudden stop, he stumbled a little before getting his balance back. The scarecrow let a nervous giggle out of his carved mouth.
“Sorry about that everyone!” he said to the small crowd of Halloween residents that had gathered to watch his magic act on the street corner near the town hall. Hollow quickly started his next trick, turning a burning piece of straw that he had pulled out of his arm and ‘transforming’ it into a frog.
It had been several months since Hollow left the town to join the academy after he had been accepted. Ever since then, he learned so many things, had attempted to help with the war that was going on and he had met so many people who were really nice. He even helped paint the cafeteria orange for Halloween! It was more than Hollow had hoped for and he knew that he didn't know enough words to express how happy he was. There had been times where the scarecrow had wanted to pinch himself to make sure that everything he had experienced so far wasn't some very imaginative day dream. (He had tried but couldn't feel a thing.)
It was when school year was approaching that Hollow thought back to the spooky town. There wasn't anything to make him return there as far as he knew and as much he hated to admit it, there wasn't anyone waiting for him to come back. And yet, he loved Halloween Town (didn't everyone?) and it was his home or the closest thing to it at least. Hollow wanted to go back to visit before become too busy to do so with his classes and school work. After asking for permission from one of the teachers, he quickly left, heading towards the trees with the holiday doors on them.
When the scarecrow landed back in Halloween Town, he thought that since he might not be performing his magic tricks as much as he used to do, he may as well do one more show on the street corner where Jack had found him. It felt right somehow.
Looking over the audience as they gasped with delight at the frog in his hands, Hollow wondered if anyone from the academy was amongst them.

John's feet skidded across the cobblestones as he landed in Christma- oh no. He glanced around, looking for a sign of his cheery destination. This wasn't Christmas Town though, it was Halloween Town! He rubbed his eyes and wished he'd gotten more sleep. He'd been up all night painting, even though he knew he had to get up early the next day to see Robin. He must have chosen the wrong door in his stupor.
None of that mattered now, he had to find the Christmas doors. He spun around to no avail. The doors were not here. Suddenly he felt a chill as he realized he was probably the only human here. His eyes moved from person to person. Was that werewolf staring him down? Did that short vampire just lick her lips oh noooo- he quickly turned from her direction and started walking. He could only hope it was the right way.
A little ways down he noticed a good sized crowd standing around. His curiosity got the better of him, and he made his way to the outskirts of the crowd. To his surprise a familiar face was in center stage. Yeah, he'd seen that guy around the academy! Or so he hoped! Maybe he could help him find his way out before- turkey feathers was that vampire stalking him? He pushed his way farther into the crowd and prayed the show would be over soon.

The scarecrow had just made the frog ‘disappear’ into thin air while secretly hiding it in his body when he heard sounds from the crowd. Well, there were the usual voices of wonder, Hollow was expecting that because the frog. But there seemed to a few noises mingling with those sounds like ‘Hey!’ and a few apologises being made. He took a quick glance towards the crowd before – Wait! Was that a human?! Hollow had only caught a glimpse but he was almost sure that it wasn’t Blade. That meant that was another human in Halloween Town!
As he scanned the faces of the Halloween residents to see if he could spot them again, the scarecrow noticed the same faces were waiting impatiently. With his mind panicking, he called out, “Um...Sorry everyone! T-this will be the last trick for today!”
He really wasn’t sure what to do next; the next trick would take time to do and he wasn’t sure how long the human would stay with the crowd. Maybe he could...no, he did that trick earlier....Perhaps...NO! He hadn’t gotten that one right yet..... Oh Bats! What could he do?! Hollow absentmindedly reached for his hat-OH! His hat! He completely forgot! Relief filled him as he turned to the crowd with his usual carved smile. “Okay everyone! Watch carefully now!” he said, readying himself.

While watching out for the fanged girl, John heard the scarecrow announce the last trick. Thank god, he thought. He stood on his toes to try and see over the witches hat in front of him. With a little leaning he was able to catch glances of the trick. He tilted a bit too far forward and stumbled, knocking a few people aside. Face turning red, he was pretty sure he'd just channeled Emma's lack of grace. At least he was in the front row now.

Hollow focusing on the image he had in mind, the scarecrow boy made a sweeping motion with his arms in front of himself. There were more sounds of scuffling but he paid no attention to it. Despite not needing to breath, he held his breath and closed his eye holes. Feeling his body shift into its new shape, he suddenly leapt forward. Just a metre before the group, Hollow landed on his hands. Or rather, his front paws.
Before the crowd, in place of the scarecrow, stood a dark green coloured lion covered sewn on patches. Its mane was a shaggy, orange mess, with tufts of black hair sticking out in all directions. Opening his now glowing red eyes, Hollow let out a loud roar which made the some of the audience squeal with surprise.

John jumped about a foot in the air. His confidence in asking this kid for help was a little shaken, along with the rest of him. The crowd seemed to love it though and he clapped along with them. He had to admit the trick was impressive; he could barely do a simple card trick. The show seemed like it was finally over, so he anxiously waited until the scarecrow boy started packing up. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he carefully approached him. "H-hey," he said. "You're from the academy, right?" Please let me be right.

While the audience clapped, Hollow transformed back into his usual form, quickly getting up and made a small bow.
“Thank you very much! I hope you enjoyed the show!” he called as the residents began to disperse. He then quickly turned his back and unbuttoned some of the buttons on his shirt. Making sure no one was watching, the scarecrow dipped his glove into his body and began shifting through his straw filling until he found the frog he had hidden earlier. Scooping it out of his body, Hollow knelt on one knee and gently set the frog down on the ground.
“Thank you for helping with my trick earlier. They really liked it!” he said happily to the frog. “I have to go now but thank you again, Goodbye!” The frog ribbitted once and it started hopping away down the street. Hollow watched it go as he buttoned himself up again. He was about to stand, hoping to catch the human before they left, when a voice asked him about the academy. The scarecrow let out a squeak of surprise before quickly standing up; hastily turning on the spot. His non-existent eyebrows rose when he found himself facing the very human he had spotted earlier.
“I...Um...Oh! Yes! I’m starting this year soon.” Hollow managed to reply, silently groaning to himself. He must have looked really ridiculous to the human just now. Maybe he should try again, “A-are you from the academy as well?”

Knitting his eyebrows together, John considered how embarrassing it was that the other kid didn't recognize him. There was what, maybe 20 kids in the academy? Whatever, he had better things to do than worry about how well known he was.
"Yeah, I'm in the Thanksgiving class. Which brings me to my next question. I'm not supposed to be here- which is not to say this isn't a... great looking town and I wouldn't come another time- but it's really not where I was going! I need to be in Christmas town! And the problem is, I don't know where this town's doors are and I'm pretty sure there's a vampire stalking me! So long story short, could you help me find my way out?" Suddenly remembering his manners, he gave the scarecrow a pleading look. "Please?"

Although the scarecrow wasn’t too sure what ‘stalking’ was, he listened attentively as the human asked for his help. Hollow gave what he hoped was a friendly smile as he replied.
“Of course I can. The Holiday doors are not too far away from here. They’re just in the woods outside of town. We can get there if we go through the graveyard.” He was about to turn when he remembered that he didn’t know the other student’s name. Mentally scolding himself, he looked at the human with a sheepish look.
“I’m sorry for being rude; my name is Hollow. What’s your name?” he asked.

John's shoulders slumped in relief. "Thank you so much, "he said. He blinked when the scare- Hollow said his name, also realizing their lack of introductions. He waved the apology away, replying, "No problem, it's my fault too. I'm John." He scratched his head before adding, "Nice to meet you!"

Hollow’s smile got bigger at John’s response. “It’s nice to meet you too!” he said cheerfully. “I hope that the last trick didn’t scare you too much. Everyone here tends to like the spooky magic tricks that surprises them. I like them as well but since I’ve only met a few people from the other towns, so I’m not sure if the tricks I do would be too scary. There’s only a few I know that are not that scary to me but they might seem a little frightening to others.”
The scarecrow stopped when he realised that he had rambled on for a bit. Oh Halloween, he must have sounded so boring. The only one he had talked to this much was Bloody and according to the crow, it was used to it because crows were such chatterboxes anyway. Feeling embarrassed with himself, he turned away slightly. “Um...I’m sorry...Would you like to go now?” he asked, apologetically.

John listened as the kid went on. He sure could talk! Not that it was bad! "Ah no, it was cool. Yeah, not scary at all to me!" He lied. "Now if my sister were here, she'd be up that tree with fright!" He suddenly hoped that Emma would never ever meet Hollow because boy would he be in trouble for that one.
He felt a sudden chill and turned his head, catching a movement in the shadows. "Y-yeah, I think that's a good idea."

“Sister?” Hollow couldn’t help repeating the word, mainly because he’d never heard of the term before. Maybe it was a Thanksgiving thing. He nodded when John replied, turning to start walking down the main street. Secretly, the scarecrow was glad he hadn’t scared off the Thanksgiving student. (Not that he was any good at scaring anyway.)
“Going through the graveyard is probably the quickest way to get to the trees and it’s the one I use to get to the academy so I know it fairly well. Though, it’s the only way I know. Did you say you wanted to go to Christmas Town?”
He had tried to not talk so much this time, he really did. It was a little difficult though, when there was so many questions in his head. Out of the corner of his carved eye, a shadow shifted on a wall to his left. Hollow didn’t pay much attention to it; shadows moved all the time in the town.

"Graveyard, eh?" John's head swam with visions of ghosts popping out from gravestones and zombies digging their way through the dirt. He almost missed Hollow's question, and shook his head to clear away the terrible thoughts. "Yes! That is my destinition, haha!" His breathy laugh trailed off as he followed the other boy's eyes to a nearby wall. Nothing was there, thankfully. "So, um, lead the way?"

“Oh! Of course! It’s just down the main street and leads to Mr Jack’s house. The graveyard is close by from there.” The scarecrow said confidently and began making his way down the street. A few of the resident monsters would glance in the pair’s direction before returning to their own affairs.
Every so often, Hollow would check to make that he wasn’t leaving John behind. After a few moments, Hollow spoke. “Um, if you don’t mind me asking, do you go to Christmas Town a lot?”
